Abstract

Digital transformation in the maritime transport sector requires vocational education institutions to develop learning models that effectively bridge theoretical knowledge with the real-world operational complexities of ports. One technology with significant potential to address this need is the Digital Twin—a dynamic digital representation of a physical object, system, or process linked to real-time data, enabling the modeling, monitoring, analysis, and simulation of its condition and behavior. This article aims to formulate a Digital Twin integration model for an "educational port"—serving as an operational simulation environment—to enhance the competencies of maritime transport cadets. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach utilizing conceptual design and systems analysis, encompassing the identification of competency requirements, mapping of port operational processes, design of the Digital Twin architecture, development of simulation scenarios, and formulation of competency indicators. The resulting model integrates data regarding vessels, berths, cargo handling equipment, terminals, vehicle traffic, weather, safety, and human resource activities into a digital simulation environment. The study's findings indicate that Digital Twin integration fosters a more adaptive learning environment, allowing cadets to practice decision-making under both normal and abnormal conditions while providing a data-driven evaluation mechanism. The proposed learning model comprises five key layers: physical, data acquisition, digital model, simulation and analytics, and learning and evaluation. Its implementation focuses on developing technical and safety competencies, as well as skills in decision-making, problem-solving, communication, coordination, and situational awareness. This article presents a conceptual framework for an Educational Port Digital Twin that can be developed incrementally within maritime transport educational institutions. The model is not intended to replace field practice but rather to serve as a bridge connecting classroom learning, simulators, and actual port operational experience.
